Prepping for Product Shoots

It has taken me years to understand that product imagery is just really hard. Its always going to be hard. I get an exciting collection of objects and the first impulse is just to look at them...then I start shooting, and I over complicate things, then I realize its always way better to go for authenticity and good lighting...and hope that a gleam of originality will find its way into the compositions. I have been ignoring the fact that this facet of my job can actually be fun and have been playing it very safe...

Today however,  I have the great pleasure of photographing a new collection of jewelry by my dear friend Ben Peeler. The jewelry is a dazzling array of familiar and and unusual shapes, and I am  inspired to pair them with our urban surroundings. In this situation all bets are off, I can't wait to run around town chasing high concept pipe dreams and hoping for success.

In the world of blinding e-commerce white,  having creative liberty is almost unheard of and I am counting down the hours until I can get started on the project. Joy is my most effective caffeine... so in this case I am very lucky...
